About Us

Who We Are

DUBAF is a non-governmental, non-profit making, and non-partisan humanitarian organization founded by natives of the Haraqallo area on the 10th of January 2002 (GC). It was originally established by its first name ‘Duba Gololcha Foundation (DGF) in memory of the late Duba Gololcha, however, later on, renamed and legally registered on July 29/2004, at the Ethiopian Ministry of Justice with the name ‘DUBAF’ on acquiring legal identity as a national NGO of Ethiopia.

Since then, it has been regularly re-registered under the Agency for Charities and Civil Societies, as a National Humanitarian Development Organization to operate in the southern half of Ethiopia (Oromia, Somali, Gambella and Southern Nations Nationalities Peoples, and Addis Ababa regional states).

The word 'dubaf' in Afaan Oromo bears two meanings: 'for Duba' and 'for tomorrow (future times, meaning, next-generation)'. But the acronym DUBAF represents Development by Unity and Brotherly Action for the Futures, indicating the commitment of the organization – making lasting positive differences in the life and livelihoods of the next generation.

Over the two decades of its existence, DUBAF has been operating in three regional states in the southern half of Ethiopia: Guji, West Guji, East Shewa, Bale, Borana East, and West Hararge zones of Oromia Regional State; Sidama, Gedeo, and Silte zones of SNNP; and Majang zone of the Gambella regional state.

The Naming

The organization is named ‘DUBAF’ attributing to three meanings:

  1. The first attribute of the name just bears the memorial purpose so as to continue, in the next generation, the exemplary efforts that were made by Obb. Duba Gololcha for the betterment of the life of marginalized communities.
  2. Secondly, the word “DUBAF” in the local language means “for the future, for the next, for the forthcoming…” so as to indicate that the strategic goal of the organization aims at creating better life & livelihood for the next generation.
  3. The third meaning is derived as an abbreviation from “Development by Unity and Brotherly Action for Futures”, indicating its institutional mission.
